ACCIDENT RECONSTRUCTION

Accident Reconstruction, also referred to Vehicular Accident Reconstruction and Fatality Accident Reconstruction, is used when the people involved in the accident are killed or where witness’ accounts vary. Accident reconstruction is a reconstruction of how an accident occurred, including who was driving, who was breaking the law, where the victims were seated, were they using seat belts, speed and direction of a vehicle. Accident reconstruction consists of measurements of skid, gouge and yaw marks, and conducting skid tests. Personal Injury Lawyers and this Firm, The Law Offices of Cary Schulman utilize accident reconstruction to determine the responsibility or negligence of drivers of trucks, cars, automobiles, motorcycles, 18 wheelers, tractor trailers and pedestrians in automobile accidents and crashes and highway collisions resulting in wrongful death or serious injury.  A Fatal Accident Reconstruction Team, or F.A.R.T. is a group of police officers dedicated to investigating motor vehicle accidents that result in death. These type of investigations can involve vehicle on vehicle, vehicle on fixed object or vehicle on pedestrian. The investigation of accidents with no survivors is of particular interest, because the detectives often have no eyewitnesses to give an account of the event.  The Cary Schulman Law Firm, however, utilized the expertise of accident reconstruction in serious injury cases, not only wrongful death cases, when the injury accident is such that it is necessary to properly and adequately represent the client and determine legally who is repsonsible for the accident whether it is a highway collision, multiple vehicle accident or solo car accident.

Functional analysis (yaw mark testing) is employed to determine the ideal path of a vehicle undergoing a limit lane-change maneuver, given the tire-road coefficient of friction and either vehicle velocity or geometric constraints. Vehicle velocity is assumed to be constant. The problem is formulated using the calculus of variations. The solution technique relies on elliptic functions to achieve a closed-form solution. The synthesis of an ideal lane-change trajectory is treated as a minimal-energy-curve optimization problem with prescribed continuity and boundary conditions. The concept of critical speed is employed to limit the maximum curvature of any specified lane-change, thereby ensuring that the trajectory function determined describes a path that actually can be traversed. The analytical solution is confirmed by comparison to a numerical solution.  This test is performed in rollover accidents.  Rollover accidents have particular characteristics and often are fatal.

Gouge marks are marks found off the roadway surface where a car has hit the ground, typically showing where the car landed after leaving the roadway and if a rollover accident, will show where and how many times a vehicle landed.

A skid mark is the mark a tire makes when a vehicle wheel stops rolling and slides or spins on the surface of the road.   Skid marks are divided in to "acceleration marks" created on acceleration, if the engine provides more power than the tire can transmit, "braking marks," if the brakes "lock up" and cause the tire to slide, or “yaw marks,” if the tire slides sideways. Each has a characteristic appearance, and an experienced accident reconstructor or forensic engineer can often determine what the vehicle was doing by examining the marks left by the tire.
